The Gluten Getaway

A gluten-free diet is a two-step mission.  First and foremost, you will need to eliminate any gluten-containing foods in your diet.  Having done that, you will be able to concentrate on the foods that you can eat without worry.  This is a small list of food items that you will definitely want to avoid.  There could be other foods that you will need to avoid, since everyone is different, your specific avoidance of certain foods is something that you will need to discuss with your doctor to make sure you are completely covered.

 

Food To Avoid:

            - Bread, biscuits, cakes, cookies, crackers, crispbreads, doughnuts, flour (white or whole grain), muffins, pancakes, pastry, pies, pretzels, rolls, toast, and waffles.

            - Breakfast cereals made with wheat or oatmeal, such as All-Bran, wheat flakes, puffed wheat, shredded wheat, Sugar Smacks, Grape-Nuts, oatmeal, and wheat germ.

            - Macaroni, noodles, spaghetti, semolina, vermicelli, and other pastas.

            - Meat pies, luncheon meat, canned meat, meat loaf, commercial hamburgers, sausages, bologna, and frankfurters.

            - Canned soups and soup mixes.

            - Vegetables with cream sauces or crumbs, such as baked beans.

            - Commercial sauces and ketchups, gravies, and salad dressings.

            - Packet and pudding mixtures, pastry mixtures.

            - Malted milk, Ovaltine, Postum, beer, and commercial milk flavorings.

            - Baking powder.

            - Cheese spreads.

            - Most ice creams, except those specifically approved.

            - Commercial chocolates and licorice sweets.

 

Now just when you are thinking this leaves you with a no-foods diet, you will be pleased to know that you are actually left with plenty of options; which are discussed in the next article.
