John Dewey

John Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont in Oct.20, 1859. His family was of modest means but he went to the University of Vermont where he graduated in 1879 earning his Ph.D. from the School of Arts & Sciences at John Hopkins University in 1879. He, along with William James and Charles Sander Peirce, is recognized as one of the founders of the philosophy of pragmatism and of functional psychology. He is best known for his publications concerning education. In this area he felt innovative educational approaches with outdoor education, adult training and experiential therapies would make school a more enjoyed situation rather then a hated one. He felt that the educator should take into account the unique differences of each student and when the curriculum was designed it should allow for such individual differences. This is a very good article one that everyone would enjoy reading.
