The number of elderly people that are abused or neglected in their own homes, in relatives homes, and in facilities that are responsible for their care are staggering. Every year, tens of thousands of elderly people are reported abused, and the numbers continue to grow yearly. Experts believe those statistics do not tell the whole story. They believe that for every reported case of elderly abuse, five cases go unreported. Sometimes seniors do not report the abuse even if they are able to for fear of retaliation from the caregiver, or they believe that no one else will take care of them. There are many forms of elderly abuse but is generally defined as the infliction of physical, emotional, or psychological harm on an older adult; any non-accidental use of force including threats and intimidation, sexual abuse, physical neglect and financial exploitation are included as well. General warning signs that could be an indication of some form of elderly abuse is frequent arguments or tension between the caregiver and elderly person; changes in the personality, behavior, or financial condition of the senior. You can help prevent elderly abuse by listening to senior citizens and their caregivers; intervene if you suspect abuse; educate other people on how to recognize and report elderly abuse. By learning the signs and symptoms of elder abuse and how to act on behalf of a senior citizen that is being abused, you will not only be helping the senior, but you will strengthen your own defenses against elder abuse in your future. Senior citizens can protect themselves against abuse by making sure their financial and legal affairs are in order. Get professional help to ensure all matters are in order with the assistance of a trusted friend or family member. Avoid being isolated; this increases your vulnerability to abuse. If you are unhappy with the care you are receiving either in your home or in a care facility, say so, and continue to say so until someone helps you. Tell someone that you trust and ask for their assistance in reporting the substandard care or abuse. |
