Every day we deposit millions of bits of data into our short- and long-term memory banks. As we get older, it becomes more and more difficult to retrieve this data when we need it, not only because information overload worsens as we age, but because our ability to memorize information worsens as we are further removed from school experience, where we were forced to memorize information for class subjects. As we age, we fall out of practice when it comes to memorizing bits of information. Before we know it, we can’t remember someone’s name at a social function, or where we put the car keys, or what we are supposed to be buying at the grocery store. In other words, our memory muscles have grown flabby. But sagging memory muscles can be exercised just like any other muscle in your body. If you don’t work and stretch the memory muscles they will atrophy just like any other muscle in your body. There are some simple exercises that can be done to work and stretch your memory muscles as you go about your daily activities. After performing the exercises regularly, you will see a noticeable difference in your ability to dip into your memory bank and retrieve facts, figures, names, and faces when you need them. |
