The Evolution of Fishing

Historians and others who have researched the subject of fishing have found references to the practice of ancient fishing dating back to at least 40,000 years ago. Lifestyle necessitated fishing for survival rather than for recreational sport (in addition to commercial use for food) as we know it today.
Ancient techniques used for catching fish included harpooning or spearing fish with barbed poles. Early Native Americans fished with gorged hooks and line tackle. Ancient Egyptians fished from reed boats, utilizing woven nets, hook and line, and harpoons. Willow branches were used to make weir baskets to hold the catch.
