Types of Alternative Medicine

You may have heard the general term "alternative medicine" before, but you may not be certain exactly what it entails. As a general rule, alternative medicine attempts to minimize the use of surgery or drugs, and focuses on preventative and therapeutic treatments instead. Because of its natural approach, the benefits of alternative medicine are numerous. There are many types of alternative medicine available, but some of the most popular include herbalism, acupuncture, and massage therapy.

Herbalism is based upon many ancient traditions that rely on the medicinal properties of plants. In fact, herbalism was what doctors relied upon prior to the advent of pharmaceutical drugs. Since herbal treatments do not contain the artificial ingredients found in most pharmaceuticals, they are believed to be better for the body. Just like other forms of medicine, specific plants are used to treat symptoms of various illnesses, and they are also used as a key piece in preventative health.

When it comes to the different types of alternative medicine, none causes as much anxiety as acupuncture. This is probably because acupuncture is the process of inserting threadlike needles into the body for healing purposes. Research has revealed acupuncture being used in China as early as two centuries before the common era. Acupuncturists are trained at inserting these needles into specific trigger points that will aid in the relief of pain, as well as help cure illness.

Massage therapy is, perhaps, one of the most accepted and used types of alternative medicine. Massage uses a number of techniques to rub and soothe the body's muscles. By applying pressure, massage therapists are able to relieve pain, reduce anxiety and stress, and aid the body in a full removal of toxins

Even beyond herbalism, acupuncture, and massage therapy, there are numerous types of alternative medicine. These treatments can be used as a supplement to more traditional medical programs, or they can also be used in lieu of them. However, depending on the medical issue you are facing, it's important to talk with a trained physician prior to choosing alternative treatment plans.
